What gets sent, to whom, and when.
WhereAmI has no application server of its own: no location data is collected, stored, or transmitted to a WhereAmI server. The geolocation permission prompt is handled natively by your browser, directly between it and you.
Processing of your position (coordinates, altitude, speed, heading, accuracy) happens entirely on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere. This feature keeps working offline once the site is added to your home screen.
When you ask to find an address, the coordinates of the chosen point (GPS position or a point clicked on the map) are sent directly by your browser to Nominatim, an OpenStreetMap service, without going through a WhereAmI server. This feature doesn't work offline.
Altitude comparison likewise only sends the coordinates of the selected point — to Open-Elevation. Doesn't work offline.
The nearby points-of-interest search sends the coordinates of the active point to OpenStreetMap's Overpass API. Doesn't work offline.
An anonymous, aggregated visit counter (with no personally identifiable data) is recorded with a third-party service on each page load.
The share button uses your device's native share tool, or simply copies the site's link to your clipboard. No data is sent to WhereAmI in this process.
